PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER
(STATISTICS)
SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
PIETERMARITZBURG & WESTVILLE CAMPUSES (2 POSTS)

The School offers a vibrant educational and research environment in Applied
Mathematics, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics. The School has many well
established national and international collaborative research linkages. In order to
strengthen its teaching and research capabilities, the School wishes to appoint a
candidate who will actively contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate
teaching, supervision and research in Statistics or Applied Statistics. For senior positions
relevant validated industry and/or policy experience is recommended. The successful
applicant will report to the Academic Leader of the Discipline.
Minimum Requirements:
Professor:
• A relevant PhD degree
• Experience in teaching at a tertiary institution
• Evidence of research scholarship, particularly in Statistics or Applied Statistics
research, appropriate for this level as evidenced by publications in ISI/DHET or SAPSErated
journals
• Successful supervision of MSc and PhD students
• Demonstrated ability to attract external research funds
• Evidence of strong academic leadership
Associate Professor:
• A relevant PhD degree
• Experience in teaching at a tertiary institution
• Evidence of research scholarship, particularly in Statistics or Applied Statistics
research, appropriate for this level as evidenced by publications in ISI/DHET or SAPSErated
journals
• Successful supervision of MSc and PhD students
• Demonstrated ability to attract external research funds

Senior Lecturer:
• A relevant PhD degree
• Experience of teaching at a university level or a relevant combination of tertiary level
teaching and industry experience
• Evidence of research scholarship, particularly in Statistics or Applied Statistics
research, appropriate for this level as evidenced by publications in ISI/DHET or SAPSErated
journals
• Successful supervision of MSc and/or PhD students.
• Evidence of knowledge of statistical software packages shown by individual or group
deliverable(s)

Lecturer:
• MSc degree in Statistics or Applied Statistics
• Demonstrable ability to carry out research as evidenced by at least one publication
in ISI/DHET journals or a peer-reviewed conference proceedings article.
• Demonstrable ability of teaching Statistics or Applied Statistics at a university level
• Evidence of knowledge of statistical software packages shown by individual or group
deliverable(s)

The successful candidate at a Lecturer level will be expected to complete a PhD within 5 years from date of assumption of duty.

This appointment will be made in line with the University Guidelines/benchmarks which are available on the University Vacancies website.

Appointment to this position will be on the January 2018 Conditions of Service.
