Job Description

St John’s College seeks to appoint a part time Outdoor Education Mentor at Maretlwane Wilderness School for three four-week programs running in July 2018.

The Maretlwane Wilderness School is situated in the foothills of the Magaliesberg Mountains near Mooinooi, NW Province. Maretlwane is dedicated to exposing young people to the beauty of the outdoors and the opportunities it provides. Longer-stay Wilderness Schools; short-stay camps; and self-catering accommodation and camping are amongst the range of opportunities available to clients who visit Maretlwane. St John’s College, in partnership with the Maretlwane Trust, operates and manages the operation.

The scope of work as a Maretlwane Mentor is very broad and exposes the suitably qualified candidate to an exciting range of learning opportunities. The successful applicant will be involved in the day-to-day running of the Maretlwane program, which will include acting as role model and mentoring a group of eight boys, assisting with outdoor activities, managing sporting, teaching and coaching sessions, program development, etc. Applicants therefore require a skills set that matches this profile.

The responsibilities include, inter alia:
Instruct students in all aspects of our Outdoor Education program
Host school groups, providing clear orientation instructions and announcements
Communicate and model safe practices in all camp activities and areas of camp
Assist in secondary duties when needed in other areas of camp

The successful candidate will require the following essential skills and attributes:
Ability to work independently in a remote environment
Be willing to support the Christian ethos of the organisation
Should be experienced and qualified in outdoor guiding activities. Additional experience in hiking, rock climbing, abseiling and kloofing would be an advantage
Must be of sound character and able to set a worthy example for the youth, staff and associated members of the program.
Must be willing to undergo a SAPS clearance check (as do all school teachers)
Ability to lead, motivate and if necessary discipline a group of young people placed in your care for the duration of a program
First aid level 1 qualified or higher
Tertiary education in teaching, coaching or guiding an advantage
Previous mentoring experience and life skills training programs an advantage
Requires adequate physical fitness and ability to walk, run, climb
The position offers on-site accommodation and all meals are provided while on duty. Working hours will be flexible and subject to the needs of the organisation and role.
