Job Description

The Department of Psychiatry & Mental Health invites applications for the position of course convener for the
postgraduate diploma in Addictions Care. The incumbent will be responsible for coordinating the Postgraduate
Diploma in Addictions Care, which aims to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of professionals and nonprofessionals
admitted via an Recognition of Prior Learning process working in the addictions field.
Requirements:
 The applicant should be a qualified psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, or a general practitioner. General
practitioner must have a postgraduate diploma in addiction psychiatry and mental health to be considered.
 The applicant should have demonstrable experience in the provision of addictions treatment.
 Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
 The applicant should have qualifications that would allow registration with the Health Professions Council of
South Africa as a medical practitioner, psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
 Ability to build and maintain effective partnerships and relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Prior teaching and research experience will be advantageous.
Responsibilities:
 Develop and update the course curriculum, materials, and method of delivery, as necessary.
 Lecture, supervise and conduct assessment of students enrolled on the Diploma and in the Faculty.
 Co-ordinate students’ practical placements and supervision.
 Maintain good relationship with current funder and explore future funding opportunities.
 Build relationships with local treatment, NGO and research sector
 Contribute to research in the Division of Addiction Psychiatry
 Participate in the activities of the South Africa HIV Addiction Technology Transfer Centre, which is embedded
with the Division of Addictions
 Perform clinical services, as required
This is a full time post for three years with an annual cost of employment of R639 848.
