Job Description

The Scientific Computing Research Unit (SCRU) seeks to appoint a full-time Chief Scientific Officer.
This is a 3-year contract post linked to Professor Kevin J Naidoo’s South African Research Chairs Initiative
(SARChI) in Scientific Computing. The position is centered on Bioinformatics and/or Cheminformatics research
and development in the area of Cancer Glycobiology.
Requirements include:
 Minimum Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics or related discipline;
 Minimum of 1-year experience in Systems Administration of Linux Computer Systems;
 Senior undergraduate level courses in Computer Science and/or Statistics.
Advantages:
 Considerable programming experience in one or more of Python or Fortran 90 or C++ or MySQL;
 Development experience in Galaxy or comparable web-based data analytics platform;
 A working knowledge of database design and development;
 A publication record in international peer-reviewed literature in Bioinformatics Methods/Applications or
Cheminformatics methods development.
Responsibilities include:
Develop and maintain Informatics tools for applications in the life sciences:
o Develop a comprehensive database, informatics tools and toolsets on a Galaxy/web bioinformatics server;
o Develop computer models for life science applications;
o Develop Python scripts for automated laboratory systems.
Systems administration of SCRU’s high performance computer systems:
o Development of high performance informatics simulation tools for application to Cancer Glycobiology;
o Manage computer facilities and infrastructure;
o Liaise with service providers.
Graduate Student Support:
o Resolve technical issues and queries;
o Assist with postgraduate research;
o Provide training workshops.
An attitude of engagement and fast learning is required. It is important that the appointee is able to work well
with members of the research unit, but also able to work independently. The appointee must be able to liaise with
students and the academic community both locally and internationally.
The annual remuneration package for 2018, including benefits, is between R 443 134 and R 521 333.
