Information and communication servers (ICS) consolidates all computing, audio-visual, telephony,
access control CCTV and print and copy services as well as information management into a single,
integrated division across UKZN’s 4 colleges, 5 campuses, and the 50 affiliated units and sites of operation
including hospitals and research institutes.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The purpose of the job is primarily to drive the ICS Division toward its overarching objective of compliance
with the UKZN IT Strategy. ICS is client centric and a singular team with no silos, which means that as a
need/gap/crisis arises in any part of the team, all team members are required to make time available to
support the area of the team that is needed.
Principal Systems Consultants ensure the optimal provisioning of ICS services to the UKZN Community.
They provide functional & process leadership, are responsible for self-management and supervise other
experienced system consultants in their expert stream.
They supervise less experienced system administrators and provide technical expertise while interfacing
with Client Services and Application Development teams. They research, design, consult with industry
experts and provide industry leadership in innovative design of leading edge technology implementing
this in the largest environment of its kind in the province and at a world class standard.
They identify and optimize system performance issues and are responsible for resolving these problems.
They analyse user requirements and participate in capacity forecasting, asset optimization, efficient
utilisation and defining the technology specifications underpinning the provision of ICS services. Provides
expertise and direction to the University’s Academic and Support staff in each of their relevant fields.
The incumbent will report to the: Systems and Services Manager
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE
Relevant and industry recognised professional IT certification (eg. MCTS, MCSE) AND
Relevant 3 year degree AND
8 years relevant proven working experience in systems, server and application provisioning in a
large and complex heterogeneous Information Technology organization.
Proven experience with Installation & Configuration of Databases (Oracle, MS-SQL, MySQL)
Proven experience with Installation & Configuration of ITS Applications;
Proven experience with Installation & Configuration of Microsoft Products (Active Directory,
Exchange, Lync, SharePoint, System Center, Service Desk)
