CIVICUS seeks to appoint an Advocacy and Campaigns Officer to be based in Johannesburg.
Coordinate CIVICUS’s advocacy initiatives and campaigns in Africa
Maintain and strengthen relations with civil society representatives, formal and informal civil society organisations, Human Rights Defenders, Social Movements and activists in Africa and engage with regional and international human rights mechanisms and Special Procedures
Analyse trends on civic space in Africa and develop appropriate advocacy initiatives and campaigns in collaboration to CIVICUS’ members to respond to civic space restrictions
Develop innovative online and offline campaigns to respond to civic space restrictions in Africa
Carry out critical research and analysis of policy debates and political developments at the global, regional and national levels on civic space issues with a view to crafting organisational positions, advocacy strategies, briefing papers, statements, opinion pieces and editorials
Engage with CIVICUS’ external stakeholders on advocacy strategies to protect and expand civic space in multi-lateral institutions and intergovernmental bodies
Engage with and support the participation of CIVICUS members at regional and international human rights bodies like the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights and the United Nations Human Rights Council to raise concerns on restrictions on civic space and engage in advocacy
Contribute to the development of CIVICUS’ advocacy and campaigning strategies and ensure their implementation at international, regional and national levels
Facilitate and support CIVICUS’ members and partners in their policy making, campaigning and advocacy activities
Engage with policy makers and other stakeholders on CIVICUS’ strategic priorities and represent the organisation in external forums
Understanding of the state of civil society and civic space in Africa and develop advocacy plans and design campaigns to respond to restrictions on civic space
